The Boingie

The Boingie- a unique kinetic sculpture and toy.

The Boingie comprises a wobbly spring attached to a rock base. A stainless ball is attached to the end of the spring. The Boingie is specifically designed with very small friction losses, and so wobbles for a long time. 2-4 minutes of movement is typical.

The motion is lazy, slow and perfectly smooth. It bounces and rotates and sometimes tracks a figure 8 path. Very entertaining to watch, but people struggle to figure out why. I think the perfectly smooth movement is an important feature that attracts the eye. To some, the boingie appears to be alive.

The rock base is marble. The spring and ball are stainless steel, and are attach by lead-free tin-silver solder. The ball will never come off. The ball is made of 316 stainless (the most corrosion resistant type of stainless), and is highly polished by hand to a mirror finish. The ball sparkles in bright light.

The bottom of the marble base is ground flat with diamond tools. The boingie works on any flat surface.

The Boingie is a high quality device and will provide years of entertainment. Boingies are made by hand in the Vapor Genie shop. They are not available anywhere else. Makes a great gift!
